happyhappyjoyjoy opened its second location in Amsterdam East at the Oostelijke Handelskade. Housed in an impressive industrial building with high ceilings and a mezzanine, the venue provided the ideal canvas for the brand’s signature vibrant energy.

happyhappyjoyjoy is a restaurant by IQ creative, designed by concrete, and inspired by the hectic streets of Asia, serving small dishes influenced by the streets and markets of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and South Korea.

Randomly placed light boxes, colourful posters and red umbrellas create the characteristic chaotic nightlife ambiance of happyhappyjoyjoy. The diversity in the interior is extended to the sun-drenched terrace, where red Chinese lanterns build an Asian vibe, and colour warm summer nights red.

entrance and exterior

The building’s exterior retains the industrial heritage of Amsterdam. Guests enter through an outdoor garden into a space where classic architectural ornaments are painted bold red, contrasting with original, untouched ceilings. When the 3.5-meter-high west doors swing open, the interior seamlessly connects with a sun-drenched 230 m² terrace, adorned with red Chinese lanterns that light up summer nights.

street market vibes

Inside, guests are greeted by an abundance of color and light. 34 light boxes with bright artworks in varying sizes illuminate the space alongside walls covered in posters and pamphlets inspired by Asian street art.

The main dining area is divided by a central, park-bench-inspired seating module attached to a large bamboo planter. Designed on wheels, this element can be rolled away for large events.

Set under black-painted arched passages, open cabinets display Asian kitchen essentials. From crates of beer and sacks of rice to chili sauce bottles, alongside refrigerators stocked with fresh coconuts, sodas, and Asian beers.

The entresol with spacious seating area, overlooks the restaurant. Accommodating up to 70 guests, the entresol is perfect for private events and birthday celebrations. Three large, round Lazy Susan tables invite families or groups to dine together for the ultimate Asian (Chinese) experience in which sharing food is an important cultural aspect. A grid of 20 red Chinese lanterns above the entresol enhances the intimacy and colours the seating area red.
