The restaurant is located in the traditional ‘Plantage’ quarter associated with its heritage in Dutch trading and collection, specifically by boat, in the Far East.
Concrete designed the concept, name, interior design and total graphic identity of the restaurant, as well as the hotel lobby and meeting rooms.
'Mama Makan' means 'mother of food', which embodies the warm spirit of coming together with family and friends around a table filled with food. The restaurant focuses on traditional Indonesian cuisine and the signature rijsttafel.

A brass cage-like cabinet wrapped around the core hides the structure of the building. The cabinet circles around the core, with a concrete-edged palm pattern as a backdrop, organising the restaurant, bar and lobby areas. This cabinet accommodates all the functions such as the restaurant bar, chef’s tables, private dining, wine fridges, wardrobe, service stations and the open show kitchen.
Next to the large glass facades, intimacy is created by around 200 paper lanterns ‘floating’ above the tables, referring to Asian sky lanterns.

Designed as a warm, atmospheric anchor, the bar divides the lobby area with a secluded lounge hidden from direct view. Rich materials take center stage: clean white marble and bold black natural stone are complemented by dark green botanical wallpaper and supple black leather seating. Wooden details envelope the space, while low, dark-mirrored ceilings reflect the moody lighting to create a cozy hospitality experience that transitions seamlessly from day to night.

Inspired by the Indonesian culture and traditions, we created an abstract logo which refers to batik patterns: a rich, millennia-old aspect of Indonesian culture. All the Mama Makan letters of the logoare combined to create an abstract iconography which is also used as a pattern. The colour palette refers to a green wilderness, featuring an adventurous combination of jungle green and stone grey. A golden touch is added to establish a luxurious and contemporary restaurant experience.
