The West Residence is a distinctive residential building, that brings together two contrasting living experiences. At its base, loft-style apartments are set within a robust, upcycled brick structure, offering a grounded and industrial character. Above, penthouse-like residences form a light and open “cloud,” designed to capture expansive views of the Hudson River and the New York skyline.
The lower levels provide a classic loft atmosphere, defined by strong materials and generous volumes. In contrast, the upper floors are bright and airy, with glass volumes that shift in and out to shape a contemporary architectural expression. These elevated homes are carefully oriented to maximize light, openness, and panoramic views.
Each of the 222 apartments, is thoughtfully designed from the inside out to enhance everyday living. The development offers a diverse mix of studios and one, two, and three-bedroom residences, complemented by generous communal and outdoor spaces that support a balanced and connected lifestyle.

An oasis in the heart of Manhattan. Entered via West 47th Street, the building is approached through a landscaped courtyard known as The Stoop, centred around a multi-stem birch tree. This green threshold creates a gradual transition from the city’s bustle into a more private, residential atmosphere.
Inside, brick walls continue from the exterior, guiding residents into a double-height entry space, the Hall. Filled with daylight from two sides and finished with a light terrazzo floor, the space feels open and active, while backlit brass-toned steel curtains, soft furnishings, and a concierge desk introduce warmth and a sense of home. The desk extends into a high table, encouraging informal اللقاء and everyday interaction. Behind it, the brick wall forms a subtle artwork in Morse code, referencing the historic origins of Hell's Kitchen.

The building organizes social interaction vertically rather than horizontally, distributing communal functions across multiple levels. This approach encourages movement through the building and creates moments of encounter throughout the daily routine, rather than concentrating activity on a single floor.
At garden level, a shadow garden connects to a series of shared amenities. The mailroom is designed as an open, daylit space, incorporating areas for handling packages and accessing filtered water.
On Level 3, a cluster of active programs brings residents together. A double-height fitness space is positioned alongside the playroom, with visual connections between levels. An exterior yard extends the gym for outdoor training, while yoga and private training spaces overlook the main fitness area, reinforcing interaction across floors.
On Level 8, communal spaces continue this strategy. A shared kitchen and dining room provide a setting for gatherings and events, extending to an outdoor terrace when in use. Each function is placed to contribute to a sequence of spaces that are visually and physically connected.

Adjacent to the communal kitchen, a large roof deck extends over the lower buildings along 47th Street. The terrace includes an outdoor kitchen with two BBQ stations, a communal dining table and a lounge area. Next to the landscaped section, a turf area provides a playground for sports, and informal activities such as table tennis, corn hole and jumbo Jenga, combining play, exercise and relaxation with views and sunlight. On the opposite side, a dedicated dog run offers a sheltered outdoor space for residents’ pets, separated from the main terrace areas.

The swimming pool is set within stepped wooden terraces and daybeds oriented towards the Hudson River, creating a layered landscape for swimming, sunbathing and views over the city. From here, the roof extends into a viewing terrace, lounge and private gardens, forming a continuous outdoor sequence. Above the city skyline, the rooftop offers open views towards Midtown Manhattan and sunsets over the Hudson River. A wooden pergola frames the lounge area, while greenery, ivy walls and trees introduce a softer, landscaped character. BBQ stations, picnic tables and lounge seating complete the roof as a social destination throughout the day.
In collaboration with front materials, concrete created a unique brick for The West Residence club. Glass powder is embedded and baked into the bricks, giving them a subtle reflective quality that captures and responds to the surrounding nature and changing weather conditions.
